Tiffen has a filter comparison test here: I've looked as much as I can, but am finding very little information/references from the BDFX - any help on this would be much appreciated. Hollywood Black Magic seems to be very similar to (my current favourite) the Black Diffusion FX, though HBM seems much stronger in terms of density and halation than BDFX. I do, however, know that much of Game of Thrones is shot with S4's paired with a low density Hollywood Black Magic, at either 1/8 or 1/4 strength. I'm also interested to see if anybody has any experience in using diff filters paired with Cooke S4/5i's, as they are partly softer/hazier already when compared to the Primos and UP's in the tests listed above. Overall I'm looking for reduced halation (for a diff filter), with a smooth, creamy look without sacrificing noticeable detail on the face/eyes.ĭoes anybody have any experience working with these, or have any suggested methods to try to achieve the references listed above? I know this is partly possible through postproduction, though I'm looking to do as much in camera as possible. Schneider Black Hollywood Magic ( ») ( ») Hey, I'm currently in preproduction for a short film in China (Varicam LT with Cooke S4i's), and am torn between a few diffusion filters/methods of achieving a low contrast/cool pastel/soft look.
